Douglas

Douglas. Pop 1,799, U S census 1910. Present pop 2,450. Settled in 1885. Is a p o and mining settlement on Douglas Island and Gastineau Channel, 2 miles from Juneau. It has a bank, 5 churches, 2 saw mills, a privately owned water company, municipally owned wharf, fresh and saltwater fire protection, electric light plant, one newspaper, a theatre and natatorium, fine public school building, principal and six teachers, average school attendance 240. The mines and mills of the famous Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co are located near here. The milling plant connected with this mine is the largest in the world, having 940 stamps. Pay roll averages $140,000 a month. Town is located on south side of Gastineau Channel in the direct line and a stopping place for 5 lines of steamships on the Seattle-Skagway mail route. Has telephone connections with Juneau, Thane and Treadwell. J F Henson, postmaster.
