Kodiak. Pop 400. A p o settlement and steamboat landing first settled in
1795, on Kadiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska, between 700 and 800 miles
w of Juneau, 400 sw of Valdez and 300 sw of Seward, the nearest banking
point. Sustains four general stores, a public school, Russian Orthodox
church and a Baptist church and orphanage. Fishing and salmon canning
are the principal industries. Mail semi-monthly from Seattle, via Cook
Inlet.
