Fairbanks - Introduction

Pop (summer 3,500). The metropolis of Tanana valley, situated on Chena Slough, a tributary of the Tanana River, 280 miles se of the Yukon. During the summer transportation is by water from St Michael, 1,180 miles, and in the winter by winter trail, 310 miles to Chitina – Navigation opening on the Tanana River about May 25th, and continues until Oct 1st.

Fairbanks is the supply point for the rich Tanana valley district, which includes, not only the placer gold creeks – Cleary, Chatanika, Fairbanks, Pedro, Gilmore, Engineer, Goldstream, Ester, Tenderfoot, Salchacket and Kantishna – but also the extensive coal deposits around Nenana, and the recent reports made from the several quartz claims that have been opened up on Wolf, Chatam, Upper Cleary and Fairbanks Creeks has proven the Tanana valley will soon be the most important quartz district in Alaska, insuring a permanent camp long after the placer ground has been worked out. The quartz area extends for about 30 miles along the ridge between Fairbanks Creek and Cleary Creek. The values are very high – 22 different samples of ore, aggregating 158 tons, producing $15,000 – an average of $95 per ton. The ore is all free milling and with the installation of three more stamp mills on different claims this year the output of the Tanana district will, no doubt, continue to be the largest in Alaska.

Fairbanks is an incorporated town, with all modern improvements – electric lights, water works, telephone system, connecting with the creeks for 40 miles around, excellent fire protection, and U S military telegraph service. The Tanana Valley Railway operates trains daily to the creeks, also connecting with Chena, 12 miles se of the city, on the Tanana River. There are 2 banks, 2 daily and weekly papers, 5 churches, public and high schools with an average enrollment of over 200, and a well equipped hospital. Local mills supply all the lumber needed in this district, and also ship many thousand feet down the river, and greenhouses and market gardens supply the local market with fresh vegetables the year round. The government experimental station has made a wonderful showing in the raising of grains of all kind here and also in the cultivation of potatoes, turnips, etc. and a great many successful ranchers have taken up and developed homesteads in the Tanana valley.

Mail through the summer reaches Fairbanks about weekly, 14 days from Seattle, and twice weekly through the winter in about the same time. Exp Wells, Fargo & Co. U S Military Tel service. T Henry Deal, postmaster.
