Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, is also the metropolis of the great
territory, not only in population, but in commerce and industry as well, and
is the banking center of the country. The city is situated on the east shore
of Gastineau channel, at the head of navigation for ocean going vessels.
Juneau is perhaps the most compact city in America. The population has been
conservatively placed at 4,000.
Juneau is backed by natural resources
such as few communities can boast. The gifts of nature consist in large part
of immense mineral zones carrying gold and other metals, large areas of
valuable timber, tremendous water power potentialities, coal lands, waters
teeming with all kinds of food fishes, agricultural lands, an abundant
supply of game, scenic attractions, an equable climate, and unlimited
opportunities for water transportation. Development of some of these
resources, notably the gold mining and salmon fishing industries, has made
considerable progress, and is attracting a great deal of attention.
Within the past two years Juneau commenced to modernize by substituting
enduring concrete for wood structures in the business section and many
substantial buildings have been erected. During the period mentioned upwards
of $1,500,000 was expended in new building in town. Extensive street
improvements were also made.
The commerce of Juneau shows a wonderful
increase within the past few years. The imports from the States for the year
1911 amounted to $655,182, and for the year 1915 reached a total of
$4,017,710. Machinery and supplies for the big mining developments and
building materials for the town contributed largely to the marked increase.
The waterfront from Juneau to Thane, a distance of over three miles, now
punctuated at intervals with wharves and warehouses where freight is
disposed of by the regular carriers to this place. On an average, ocean
going vessels arrive at the Municipal wharf with cargo each month, and 40
vessels call, including those southbound from points north and west. In
addition there are three regular lines of steamers and several tramp
freighters that call at the Pacific Coast Company pier.
There are
three banks in Juneau, including the Juneau branch of the First Territorial
Bank of Douglas, and they have ample facilities for transacting a much
larger business than offers; yet the showing ma__ would be considered very
satisfactory by many cities of the States having a much larger population
than Juneau. Excluding the transactions for the Federal government and the
business of the savings departments, the bank clearings for Juneau for the
year 1914 reached a total of $26,039,686.49.
The larger industries on
which Juneau depends are at present mining and fishing. The payrolls for the
Alaska Gastineau and the Alaska Juneau mining companies alone aggregate
$150,000 monthly. Tribu___ to Juneau are several smaller mines with good
payrolls. There are also salmon canneries in Juneau, but halibut fishers
make it their home and shipping port and the town is the trade center for
several of the Southeastern Alaska salmon packers. The salmon pack of last
season for Southeastern Alaska amounted to 1,789,031 cases out of a total of
4,067,832 for the Territory, or nearly half of the entire catch, which was
valued at $19,719,942. More than half of the Southeastern Alaska catch was
packed in canneries situated near Juneau.
A private corporation furnishes the municipality and all its inhabitants
with light, and sells power for general purposes about town. Another private
corporation furnishes the city with ice cold water from springs located in
the valle of Gold Creek at an altitude that gives a high pressure to the
mains in the business section. A modern telephone system is operated by a
private corporation and has long distance connection with Salmon Creek,
Thane, Perseverance, Douglas and Treadwell, __terurban ferry service of a
high standard is maintained by a private corporation. Communication with the
world is afforded by the U. S. cable service and also by wireless.
The municipality owns and operates the principal wharf in Juneau and also
maintains a municipal coal yard. Two years ago, in order to encourage the
shipping of halibut from this port, the city made a generous contract with a
cold storage company which, resulted in the erection of a modern cold
storage plant that has been in continuous operation since it was
established. It has a freezing capacity of 18,000 pounds daily and storage
room for 150,000 pounds of fish.
The city schools are representative American institutions. Students
graduating from the high school department are entitled to entry in the
leading universities of the Pacific Coast States.
A well patronized
public library is maintained by popular subscription.
There is a
splendid hospital maintained and managed by the Sisters of St. Ann. The
institution recently moved into its handsome new home, which was erected at
a cost of $60,000.
Church denominations having their own buildings
for worship include the Christian Science, Presbyterian, Methodist,
Episcopalian, Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic.
Fraternal orders
include Masons, Odd Fellows, Elks, Moose, Knights of Columbus, Order Eastern
Star, Rebeccas, Pioneers of Alaska and Arctic Brotherhood.
There are
several social organizations and societies for the advancement of the
intellectual side of life.
Like other cities of first class in Alaska, Juneau's government is
practically of the commission form. Seven councilmen elected annually are
charged with the responsibility of conducting the city's municipal affairs,
and also the schools with the aid of a board of directors chosen by the
people at the regular elections in April. The council appoints or elects all
administrative officials, which include the mayor, clerk and magistrate,
police chief and force, fire chief and force, and city wharfinger.
The city recently established a fire department with a part of the
fire-fighting crew constantly on duty and under pay.
