Local Rays - Sam Kohn, who has been seriously ill for the past three weeks is still unable to leave his room

Local Rays - S. M. Graff, wharfinger, at the People's wharf, expects to leave for the Yukon placers early next month.

Local Rays - Miss J. Sullivan, typewriter in the office of Crews, Hannum & Ivey, has resigned her position and is going to the Yukon.

Local Rays - George Hanbury of Seattle, brother of William Hanbury of this city, came up on the Queen en route for Klondike diggings.

Local Rays - Another United States commissioner for Alaska has been appointed in the person of L. R. shepherd. This makes nine commissioners who have been appointed so far.

Local Rays - Dall Deweese, who left here last week to hunt moose, on the other side of the divide, returned on the Rustler yesterday from Skaguay without having met with any success. He now contemplates a trip to Cook Inlet.

Local Rays - Thomas S. Nowell, president of the Nowell Gold Mining Company, and of the Berners Bay mining and Milling Company, arrived on the Queen. Mr. Nowell in company with his son, Fred D. Nowell left on the Rustler Wednesday for Comet City where he expects to spend most of his time for several weeks.

Local Rays - The treasury department has made Dyea a sub-port of entry. This port will have a United States commissioner, a deputy collector of customs and a deputy marshal. J. W. Ivey, our newly appointed collector of customs and J. M. Shoup, who succeeds L. L. Williams as marshal went to Dyea on the Mexico yesterday to select a site for building a new custom house, court house and jail. John U. Smith who has been appointed U.S. commissioner for Dyea accompanied them. This action of the treasury department will be thoroughly appreciated by Yukoners but is not destined to benefit Juneau.
