Obituary - Lila Louise Gray-Fawcett

Lila Louise Gray-Fawcett, a 35-year Juneau resident, died Tuesday, December 23, 1997, in Juneau, after a long illness. She was 65.

Her Tlingit name was Xax Dut hoon, Dak-tein-tan, Yatkee, Wooshketan Clan, of the Eagle Moiety.

Also known as "Lal,'' she was born Aug. 17, 1932, in Hoonah, to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gray Sr. After graduating from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, she worked as a registered nurse at Mount Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka and as a clerk typist in Juneau.

She was an active and faithful member of Northern Light Presbyterian Church. Her family writes that she loved to knit, sing in the choir, play piano and share her faith in God.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant daughter Sheila Estelle Fawcett; her only son, John George Fawcett III; and her granddaughter Laura Lila Willard.

Surviving are daughters Laura Louise Fawcett and Kathleen Cheryl Fawcett-Willard of Haines and grandchildren Leo John Fawcett of Juneau and Jeremy Barney Willard and Natasha Nancy Phillips, both of Haines. Also surviving are sisters and brothers Irene Austin and Howard Gray Jr., both of Hoonah, Gerald Gray Sr. and Harriet Knudson, both of Juneau, and Robert Gray Sr. and Dennis Gray Sr., both of Hoonah. Other surviving family members include Cecelia Kenyon and her children, Ruth Lokke and her children, Carolyn Martin and her children, her only surviving uncle Sam Hanlon and his wife, Katherine, and their children, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A viewing was held at 10 a.m. today at the Alaskan Mortuary on Riverside Drive. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. tonight at Northern Light United Church in Juneau. Pallbearers will be Steve Hanlon, Victor Austin, Johan Dybdahl, Lenny Gray, John Brown, John Hillman Jr. and Ernie Hillman Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be John Martin, Buster Davis, Frank O. Williams, Ron Williams, Tony Mills, John Williams, Norman Williams and Larry Sanders.
