Juneau resident Arlie Jeanette Hamar, 92, died May 20, 2006, in Juneau.

She was born June 21, 1913, in Tacoma, Wash., to Fred and Mabel (Braden) Ashford. She graduated from Toledo (Oregon) High School in 1930. She married Henry Glenn Hamar June 1, 1934, in Toledo, Ore., and they lived there for the next 29 years. The "North to Alaska" bug caught them. They moved to Juneau in 1963 and retired in Happy Harbor, Alaska, in 1972.

She held several secretarial positions in Toledo, including one for Georgia Pacific Pulp Mill. She was active in the local Toastmistress Club and was president of the Business and Professional Women's Club.

Family members said she was cleverly artistic, especially with three-dimensional art. In Juneau, she worked for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service until retirement.

"During her life she exemplified womanhood and motherhood," said family members. They said she was a devoted and supportive wife for 63 years, and she was a good and wonderful mother to six kids.

"She set the example for them in every important aspect of life - integrity, patience, reverence, kindness, determination, patience, hard work ethic, generosity, strong character, patience, respect and just being there for them," they said.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Tom Ashford; and a great-grandchild.

She is survived by her six children, Glenda (Wayne Holzfuss) of Madras, Ore.; George (Delight) of Riudoso, N.M.; John (Jean) of Juneau; Paula (Jim Lewis) of Tiller, Ore.; Pamela (Cliff Riggs) of Days Creek, Ore.; and Diana of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren Lynne, Andrea, Stormy, Mike, Kim, Bryan, Lisa, Jennifer, Deborah, Susan, Michael, Eric and Eddie; and 26 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 25, at the Ketchikan Mortuary chapel.
