THE JUNEAU EMPIRE
Longtime Juneau resident Ellen Raney Jones died Dec. 8, 1998, at her home in Juneau, after a year-long struggle with lymphoma cancer.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at Chapel by the Lake.
She was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Carlsbad, N.M., and raised in La Junta, Colo. She attended nursing school in Denver, and after graduating as a registered nurse, she stayed in Denver to care for polio patients. During World War II she worked on the highly classified Los Alamos project.
Looking for a little adventure, she applied for jobs in Alaska and was offered a nursing position in Nome in 1946. She met her husband there and they were married in April of 1947. They moved to Gustavus later that year, and to Juneau in 1950. The family returned to Nome in 1960, to Cantwell in 1963, and back to Juneau in 1965. They also lived in Sitka from 1969 to 1972.
She worked for Dr. Ken Moss and enjoyed meeting and helping care for children in Juneau for almost 25 years. She loved her friends, her life in the church, sewing and other crafts, socializing, playing the piano and organ, and the closeness of her family.
She is survived by her husband, Jesse H. Jones of Juneau, son and daughter- in-law Doug and JoAnn Jones, and their children Scott and Meridith, of Juneau; daughter and son-in-law Sidney and Steve Nelson, and their children Victor, Timothy, Able and Faith, of Game Creek, Alaska; daughter Christy Jones of Juneau; and daughter and son-in-law Beth and David Schwartzengraber and their family Naomi, Jessica, Jeremy, Stephen, Alex, Hannah, and Tiffany Schwartzengraber of Juneau.
In lieu of flowers at the service, the family requests that contributions be made in her name to Chapel by the Lake, P.O. Box 210607, Auke Bay, 99821; Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, 3200 Hospital Dr. Suite 100, Juneau, 99801; or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 21836, Juneau, 99803.
