Former Empire editor dies at 91

Darwin S. Lambert, a former editor of the Daily Alaska Empire, died Feb. 11, 2007, at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray, Va., after a long illness.

Lambert, 91, was born on Jan. 28, 1916, in Kamas, Utah. He moved to Juneau in 1961 and edited the Daily Alaska Empire in the 1960s. He remained in vigorous health through his 80s, said his son, Harvey Lambert of Reno, Nev.

"He was a marvelous man, but then I was prejudiced, being his only son," Lambert said. "He was the one I looked up to in my youth and ever since. He was multitalented and did a good deal of writing."

Darwin Lambert also spent time as the editor of the Ely Daily Times in Ely, Nev. A Nevada state legislator for one term in 1955, Lambert was an early advocate of Great Basin National Park. He wrote several books and made films about traveling on roads through Ely, his son said.

"He was quite a creator and innovator," Lambert said. "He was a highly intelligent man."

Darwin Lambert was preceded in death by his parents, John Carlos and Laura Seymour Lambert.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Eileen Lambert of Luray; his son, Harvey Lambert; his daughters, Sylvia Schneider of Ellensburg Wash., and Laura Rowe of Copperas Cove, Texas; his stepdaughter, Linda Burkett of Lemon Cove, Calif.; his stepsons, David Affleck of Scotts Valley, Calif., and Mike Affleck of Thorne Bay, Alaska; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
