Former Juneau resident Tom Maloney died Nov. 17, 2006, in Sitka. He was 73.

He was born on June 17, 1933, in Juneau, to the late John W. and Anna Maloney.

According to his family, he lived a rich and varied life outdoors, working construction and logging until he settled into the life of a commercial fisherman. He was successful at crabbing and was instrumental in designing the brown king crab fishery, they said.

He came to Yakutat on his boat the Irish Rover in the early 1980s. While living in Yakutat he was a member of the Yakutat Fish and Game Advisory Board and served as mayor of the community from 1998 through 2002. He was re-elected in 2004, but surrendered his position in 2005 due to illness.

His family says he was a true Irishman and of strong convictions and opinions. They recall when he donated an entire catch of crab to Bartlett Hospital to help raise money for a new heart machine.

He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest daughter, Iva.

He is survived by his daughter, Anna, of Oregon; brothers, Richard Maloney, of Juneau, and Jack Maloney, of Nordland, Wash.; and sisters, Shirley of Port Angeles, Wash., and Margaret and Rosalee, of Squim, Wash. There will be a party scheduled for the spring.
