Lifelong Alaskan Karen Loraine Mann, 47, died March 24, 2004, at Alaska Regional Hospital after a long illness.

A service was March 31 at Sitka Assembly of God Church. Interment was April 19 in the family plot at the Sitka Cemetery.

She was born May 29, 1956, to Mark and Adelaide Jacobs . A member of Hit Tlein (Big House) of the Yanyeidi (Wolf Clan) of the T'aaku kwaan, her Tlingit name was Daaxkeix.

She graduated from Sitka High School in 1974. She played the clarinet in school band and also the saxophone, flute, piano and guitar. Athletic, she played basketball with the Sitka High girls team and loved to travel then.

Her family wrote: "She was a fine seamstress and loved to make quilts, creating beautiful patterns by cutting the material and layering it in special ways. She also did cross-stitching, knitting, crocheting, drawing and remarkable paintings in watercolor and other media.

"Her favorite times were with her grandchildren, cooking and being with her parents.

"When she was growing up she always liked to help them skin a deer, clean clams, but would never do the dishes!"
She worked for many years in the lab at the Alaska Lumber & Pulp Co., also doing legal and secretarial work. She worked for several law firms in Sitka and also in Anchorage, including the Native American Rights Fund. She had been a dispatcher for the Sitka Police Department, a court clerk and a transcriptionist.

She is survived by her parents, Mark and Adelaide of Sitka; son, Mark Mann and his wife, Rebeca, of California, where he's stationed with the U.S. Navy; daughter, Rene Eubanks and husband Sid of Sitka; grandchildren, Safaya and Mason of Sitka and Mark Jr. of San Diego; brothers, Mark "Tony" Jacobs of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Harold Jacobs of Juneau; aunts and uncles, Bertha and Pete Karras of Sitka, Karen Scriven of Huntsville, Ala., Ole and Sandy Bartness of Juneau; grand-aunt, Matilda Gamble of Angoon; one nephew and several nieces.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard and Phillip.
