Lifelong Juneau resident James Eric Mayer died July 11, 2001, in Ketchikan.

Mayer was born Sept. 8, 1958, in Detroit, Mich. He grew up in Juneau and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1976. After high school, Mayer attended Western Washington University for a year and then the University of Alaska Fairbanks for a year. He worked as a draftsman and engineering technician for many years and designed the bypass at Lena Loop and also worked on the plans for the road from Juneau to Haines.

His family wrote that he loved Alaska and the fishing, hunting and camping synonymous with the Last Frontier. He was a regular salmon derby winner and loved going to Hooligan Camp at Berners Bay every year. Above all, he loved his family, friends and stepdaughter Amanda.

He is survived by his parents James F. and Audrey Mayer of Washington; sister Lynn Mayer and husband Bill Gissel of Juneau; sister Nancy Schock and husband Jeff of Washington; brother Tom and wife Lisa of Juneau; stepdaughter Amanda Green of Juneau; and three nieces and four nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. July 18, 2001, at the Chapel by the Lake.
