THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Longtime Juneau resident Gene Norton died March 1, 2001, in Long Beach, Calif., while visiting relatives. He was 55.

A gathering and farewell toast will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Triangle Club in downtown Juneau.

He was born in Los Angeles. He came to Juneau in the early 1970s and was employed at many downtown restaurants and clubs as a cook and a bartender. He also worked in Pelican at Rosie's and lived for several years in Tenakee Springs, where he served as fire chief. Most recently, he was employed by Taku Taxi.

His friends wrote, "Gene had a great intellect and taught us many things, mostly to laugh at ourselves. He was a kind and loving friend and he was always there to help."
