Obituary - Elsie G. Osborne

Longtime Juneau resident Elsie Glen Osborne, 78, died peacefully and with her family by her side, on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Muskogee, Okla., on July 4, 1923, the daughter of William Henry Scharmacher and Lola Edna (Smith) Scharmacher. She married Orvald G. Osborne of Juneau on March 6, 1943, in Texas while he was training for the U.S. Air Corps. After World War II, the couple returned to Juneau where they raised their children. She was active for the rights of disabled people, and served on various committees and a governor's commission. Her actions assisted in the founding of REACH and other similar community agencies statewide. Osborne was also a board member of the Alaska Commercial Fisherman's Memorial, a member of the Sons of Norway, Pioneers of Alaska Chapter 6, Juneau Visitors Center and Widowed Person's Services. She was a volunteer at Bartlett Hospital Gift Store and Friends of the Library Bookstore. Most recently, she volunteered to be a representative patient of the Hospice and Home Care Service Program. Osborne was also a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Lola Scharmacher; husband Orvald George Osborne, father-in-law and mother-in-law George and Bertha Osborne; brother Eugene Scharmacher and three brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her children Gloria and George Katzenberger, Bernie and Linnea Osborne, Carol Ann and Brice Pearson, and Jo Ellen Osborne; grandchildren Peter and Sandi Barclay, Jennifer and Russell Christensen, Jonathan Katzenberger, Courtney Louise Pearson and Bernadette Elsie Jean Osborne; brother George Scharmacher and wife Norma; sisters Louise Gosting, Billy and Les Hutcherson and Jo Glidden; brother-in-law Thomas Osborne and wife Dorothy; sister-in-law Lillian Crosson Frizzell and many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Resurrection Lutheran Church on Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at Mike's Place in Douglas from 2 to 5 p.m. Memorials may be given to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau at 3200 Hospital Drive, Juneau AK 99801 or to Wild Flower Court at 2000 Salmon Way Drive, Juneau AK 99801.
