Jack Schmitz died Nov. 10, 2001, in Bellingham, Wash.

He was born March 7, 1935, in Juneau, to Jack and Rosina (Messerschmidt) Schmitz. He met his wife Roseanne Meyers in Juneau when she was working as a Canadian nurse for St. Ann's Hospital. There were married in 1960 in Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Washington and moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1965 to work for the Saskatchewan Power Corp. The couple moved to Bellingham in 1970, and Schmitz worked as an auditor for the state of Washington for 24 years.

He returned to Juneau after 30 years to visit family and friends. His acquaintances in Juneau enjoyed hearing him recount how Juneau had changed.

He is survived by his wife Roseanne Schmitz; children Christine and John Schmitz; grandchildren Steven, Amanda and Laura Braykovich, all of Bellingham, Wash.; mother Rosina (Schmitz) Staveland, Renton, Wash.; sister Karen and her husband Tom, Renton, Wash.; and brother Dale and his wife Jennifer Schmitz, Juneau.

Services were held in Bellingham, Wash., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001. Memorials may be made to Mount Baker Kidney Center, 3201 Ellis St., Bellingham, WA, 98225.
