Donald J. Schultz died Oct. 21, 2001, in his home in Juneau after a battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 14, 1934, in Mandan, N.D., to Harriet (Suverly) and Henry Schultz. He graduated from high school in Riverdale, N.D., and in 1964 he received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho.

He joined the U.S. Forest Service in 1966 in Denver, Colo., as a mechanical engineer. In 1981 he transferred to the Juneau office where he remained until his retirement in 1994.

Schultz enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time with his family. He was a volunteer equipment manager during the 1980s for both Gastineau Channel Little League and the Juneau Youth Football League. He enjoyed house construction, and he designed and built a cabin, a family room addition and two homes. His last project was his retirement home, the brick house on Killewich Drive in Juneau.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lenora Pederson, foster-father Arnold Pederson, and brother Harold Schultz.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Donna, Juneau; daughter Deborah and her husband Kent Hart, North Douglas; son Matthew and his wife Glynis, Fairfield, Texas; sister Lorraine and her husband Richard Chyles, Mandan, N.D.; sister Judy and her husband Paul Stein, Minot, N.D.; sister-in-law Donna Schultz, Pendleton, Ore.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

At the request of the deceased, no services will be held. The family invites friends and relatives to join them in remembering Don's life between 5 and 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at 3879 Killewich Drive. Donations may be made to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau or to Gastineau Channel Little League.
