Pioneer Juneau resident Curtis Gordon Shattuck died Aug. 24, 2001, surrounded by his family.

He was born June 2, 1907, in Juneau to Allen Shattuck and May Agnes Swineford Shattuck, both of whom moved to Alaska in the late 1800s. He graduated from Juneau High School and the School of Journalism at the University of Washington. Upon graduation, he edited a small weekly newspaper in Seattle and later returned to Juneau to become a news reporter for the Juneau Empire. In 1930, he joined his father in the family insurance business.

Shattuck divided his free time among hobbies including politics, hiking, skiing, hunting and spending time with family and friends.

Shattuck served several positions in the Juneau Chamber of Commerce, regional and national insurance associations, the Territorial House of Representatives, Southeast Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Juneau School Board, Golden North Salmon Derby and the Juneau Ski Club. He was also a member of the Elks and Pioneers of Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Allen, sister Virginia, grandson Will and many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Louise; children Sally Slater and Allen and Roger Shattuck; daughters-in-law Janice and Terry; son-in-law Mike Slater; and grandchildren Rob and partner Alexis, Rick and wife Kelly and Lynn.

The family is planning a private memorial service.
