Obituary - Roy D. Strange

THE JUNEAU EMPIRE

Roy D. "Pooner" Strange died at the Juneau Pioneers' Home on July 8, 2001.

Strange was born July 4, 1923, to Roy and Inez Strange in Tumwater, Wash. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. When he returned to Tumwater after the war, he worked for the Olympia Brewing Co., first on the bottling line and later as an engineer.

In 1961 he and his wife Tessie moved their family to Alaska where they lived in Juneau, Douglas, Elfin Cove and Sitka. Strange worked several years for the Juneau Water Department, owned and operated the fish packer MV Kasilof and the Standard Oil fuel dock in Elfin Cove, and ran a research vessel for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The couple lived in Sitka for two years while he was working for the Department of Fish and Game.

After retirement, they traveled in their motor home visiting friends and relatives. Strange enjoyed golf and in his younger years was a hunter, fisherman, mechanic and was known to family and friends as a person who could fix anything.

He was preceded in death by his wife and son Mike.

He is survived by his son Don (and wife Beth) Strange of Olympia, Wash.; daughters Val (and husband Ron) Lind and Betty (and husband Jim) Abel of Juneau; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., July 21, 2001, at the Forest Funeral Home and Cemetery in Olympia. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Juneau Pioneers' Home Foundation, c/o 4675 Glacier Highway, Juneau, Alaska, 99801, specifically for the enhancement of a safe walking area for residents.
