Juneau resident J. C. "Red" Tomlinson died May 29, 2001.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Scottish Rite Temple, Fourth and Seward Streets.

J. C. "Red" Tomlinson

Juneau resident J.C. "Red" Tomlinson died May 29, 2001.

He was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Wapello, Iowa. In 1940 he joined the Navy and served as a signalman in World War II.

He attended the School of Mines in Socorro, N.M., and graduated from Tulsa University in 1954 with a B.S. in chemistry. He was working for a refinery in Tulsa, Okla., when he met Virginia Smith. They were married on July 9, 1955. In 1958, he began working for Philco as an electronics technician.

In 1969, he began working for the Federal Aviation Administration in Alaska, and lived in Unalakleet, Moses Point, Sisters Island, Kotezebue, Fairbanks, Cold Bay, Anchorage and finally Juneau. He retired from federal service in 1986, and worked for the state ferry system as an oiler and engineer until he retired in 1994.

He was affiliated with the Mt. Juneau Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine. He served as master of the Mt. Juneau Lodge for three years and was a 33rd degree Mason. In 1981 he joined Eastern Star and served twice as Worthy Patron. He took great interest in the Rainbow Girls organization and was serving as Rainbow Dad when he died.

He is survived by his wife Virginia; his brother Bruce of California; his daughter Nina of North Pole; his son Nels and his grandchildren Conway and Constance, all of Indiana.
