Obituary - Patrick R. West

Longtime Douglas resident Patrick Robert West died July 7, 2001, in Mesa, Ariz.

He was born in Outlook, Mont., on Feb. 28, 1924, to Robert and Grace West.

A World War II veteran, West served in combat with the 82nd Airborne Paratrooper Division where he received the Silver Star. He also was awarded the Purple Heart when he was wounded in action at the Central European Theater. After his military service in 1946, he met and married Marjorie Clark in 1948. In 1959, he moved his family to Douglas and in 1980 retired from the Juneau School District as the superintendent of maintenance. After retirement and for the rest of his life, West split his time between his summer home in Montana and a winter home in Arizona.

West enjoyed sport fishing, golfing with the Juneau Gold Club, Notre Dame football and was an active member of the Buckhorn Elks Lodge in Mesa, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his daughters Coleen and Teresa West.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Marjorie West of Arizona; daughter Mary Cargill and son-in-law Pat of Douglas; son Bill West and daughter-in-law Lori of Douglas; son Tom West and daughter-in-law Shannon of Juneau; son Mike West of Oregon; grandchildren Dillon and Devon Rose West of Juneau; Carson Cargill, Erin West, Wesley Block, Will West and Chris Harmon of Douglas; Waylon Waddell of Washington and great-grandchild Tate Anthony Parr of Douglas.

A local service will be held at a later date. Memorials can be made to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz., 85014.
