The Fairbanks North Star Borough was created January 1, 1964. It is located
in the heart of Interior Alaska, and is the second-largest population center
in the state. It is based in Fairbanks, which lies 45 minutes by air from
Anchorage and 3 hours from Seattle. Our borough encompasses an area of
nearly 95,000 square miles across northern Alaska and includes some of the
most spectacular landscapes found in North America. The borough's land area
is slightly smaller than that of the state of New Jersey.
Koyukon
Athabascans have lived in this area for thousands of years. Fairbanks
developed when the Chena steamboat landing brought many non-Natives to
Fairbanks during the Pedro Dome gold rush. The population of the area
continued to increase after construction of the Alcan Highway and the
Trans-Alaska oil pipeline.
The borough is home to the University of
Alaska Fairbanks, Fort Wainwright, and Eielson Air Force Base.
