Sitka Borough was created 1963 Sep 24. The area was originally settled by the Tlingit people over 10,000 years ago. Alexandr Baranov arrived with the Russian-American Company, a colonial trading company in 1799. In 1802, a group of Tlingit destroyed the original settlement, massacring most of the Russian inhabitants. Baranov returned in August 1804 with a large force. Following their victory at the Battle of Sitka, the Russians established the settlement, which they called "New Archangel." In 1867, after the sea otter pelt trade died out, the US purchased Alaska from the Russians. Sitka was the site of the transfer ceremony, and Sitka became Alaska’s first capital city.
