Vietnam War

The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, fought in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from September 26, 1959 to April 30, 1975. The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations.

This presentation was taken from the records provided by the National Archives and is by alphabetical by the Town of Record. This does not mean the town the men were born in or raised in or even spent time as an adult. It is the town they entered the military in and they listed that as their town of record. Sometimes the men were attending school and sometimes they had new jobs and sometimes they just wanted to start life in a new place.

Surname Another problem when researching the men is the fact they entered the military with their legal names and not necessarily their family names. So if Mom remarried and the boy was not legally adopted by his step-father and even though all his school records show him with his step-father's last name when the man went into the service he used his birth name.

Date of Death Most dates of death are when the man died however if he was declared MIA (missing in action) his death date may reflect when the military finally declared him dead which could be years after he went MIA and probably died.
