There is a large white cross at the entrance inscribed with,
"The following 72 Inupiat Eskimos are interred in this common grave. Pray, Honor and remember these villagers,
who lost their lives during the short span of five days, in the influenza pandemic. November 15-20 1918."
Below each of those individuals are listed. There were only 8 survivors in the village at the time.
Anchorage Daily News wrote an incredible article, "How an Alaska village grave led to a Spanish Flu breakthrough",
chronicling the research and scientific findings around sequencing the virus.

Fort Davis was a U. S. Army post established in the Nome Census Area of Alaska in 1900
and abandoned in 1919. Some of the remains were moved to Sitka National Cemetery after
abandonment of the fort.

The cemetery is located at the top of a mountain; coffins are uniformly marked and
placed in a white wooden casket marked by a white wooden cross. The community comes
together to build the casket and coffin, then a procession of four-wheelers takes the
deceased to their final resting place.

Most likely an abandoned Eskimo/Pauper Cemetery from 1800 to early 1900's with hundreds of unmarked,
but very obvious, graves. Some with stone markers, some with wooden markers with metal name plates.
A small marker on the edge of property says "Eskimo Cemetery."
- Pilgrim Hot Springs Cemetery
This cemetery is located approximately 60 miles north of Nome on a seasonably maintained
dirt road in the old Pilgrim Hot Springs community, which was once a village and orphanage.
All that is left of the community are a few old homes, an old church and 2 buildings.
There are two hot tubs and several hot spring ponds still in use by locals and tourists today.
