Old Miners

In 1998 I was on a bear hunt north of Unalakleet. We came across an apparent deserted gold mine, I think the Nixon Mines, and a couple of deserted cabins. One of the cabins belonged to Nellie COOK and Frank SHAW. Among the stuff in the cabin were calendars from 1921 to 1931. There was a box of papers and some receipts for gold sold in 1933. I found these photos the other day and began to wonder what happened to Cook and Shaw. --Stan Newding, 20 Jan 2025

1950 Census record shows Frank A. SHAW and Nelly L. COOK living in Ungalik. Frank was 74 years old (1876 estimated birth year in USA), never married, operating a mine. Nelly was 65 years old (1885 estimated birth year in USA), widowed, partner in mine.
