Military - Nome Census Area AKGenWeb

Fort Davis was named in honor of General Jefferson Columbus Davis, who was the military commander of Alaska from 1868-1870. The Army was sent to Nome to maintain order in 1900, due to all of the unrest from claim jumping and general unrest. Fort Davis had barracks, an icehouse, coal house, stables, bakery, gymnasium, hospital, magazine, bath, pump houses and a cemetery. It was abandoned sometime between 1917 and 1923. Fort Davis was included on the 1910 census, but not after.

In 1909 it contained 5 officers and 130 enlisted men - Companies H and I, 22nd Infantry. Soldiers who died from the 22nd Infantry from Fort Davis: Corporal William A. Stone (Company I) died of pulmonary tuberculosis on Dec 8, 1908. Sgt. Alfred Jones of Company I accidentally drowned in the Bering Sea, Nome, on June 7, 1909.
